This vegan sweet and sour sauce recipe only takes 4 mins and uses 6 ingredients to make!
All you need to make this sauce is apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar, brown sugar, and a few other simple ingredients to make it the perfect sweet and sour sauce!
Recipe for Vegan Sweet and Sour Sauce
The sweet and sour sauce is a very easy sauce recipe that you can make and use right away or store in the fridge to use throughout the week. It’s also the perfect sauce to make for any stir fry like my 12-mins vegan sweet and sour stir fry recipe!
This is one of my favourite sauces, especially when I’m craving Chinese food. I recommend using this sweet & sour sauce on tofu and vegetable stir fry with rice.
This recipe is vegan, nut-free, and can be gluten-free & soy-free!
Ingredients
- Apple Cider Vinegar / Rice Vinegar
- Brown Sugar
- Ketchup
- Soy sauce or tamari
- Pineapple juice
- Corn starch / Potato Starch
To make the recipe gluten-free, simply use gluten-free soy sauce or tamari.
To make the recipe soy-free, simply use a soy-free alternative like coconut aminos.
How To Make Sweet and Sour Sauce (Vegan)
Start making your vegan sweet and sour sauce by adding to a pan: apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, soy sauce and pineapple juice from a can (save pineapple chunks for stir fry).
Bring this to a soft boil on medium-high heat.
In the meantime, in a small bowl, mix together cornstarch or potato starch and 2 tbsp water to create a starch slurry. This will help thicken your sauce.
Pour the starch slurry into the pan and stir constantly on medium heat until small bubbles start to form and the sauce thickens.

- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce or soy/gluten-free alternative
- 1 cup Pineapple juice I used juice from canned pineapple
- 1 tbsp corn starch or potato starch
- 2 tbsp water
Instructions
- Start making your vegan sweet and sour sauce by adding to a pan: apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, soy sauce and pineapple juice from a can (save pineapple chunks for stir fry).
