This recipe for vegan chicken tacos is a super quick 12 mins recipe! This recipe is for 10-12 vegan tacos making it perfect for dinners or even meal prep for the week!

This is a vegan version of a TikTok viral recipe that I saw recently. The original recipe was for pulled chicken tacos but today I want to show you how easy it is to make vegan chicken tacos using tofu!

All you need is firm tofu, tortillas, seasoning & whatever vegetables you want to add to your tacos!

I’ll show you how to whip up some vegan chicken tacos in 12 mins! All you have to do is shred your tofu using a cheese grater, which creates such small pieces of tofu that easily soak up the taco flavouring so you don’t have to marinate for a long period of time or cook it for a long time like you do chicken.

Tofu is a great substitute for this dish as it’s high in protein and it is incredibly versatile. And by using the simple method of grating the tofu using a cheese grater, you can create those “shreds” that will mimic a “pulled chicken” texture.

Feel free to fill up your vegan tacos with anything you want on top of your “vegan chicken”. I love topping my tacos with vegan sour cream, salsa, cilantro, or even guacamole!

Ingredients

  • Tortillas
  • Tofu
  • Oil
  • Taco Spices: Cajun seasoning, paprika, red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning & salt
  • Bell Peppers
  • Onion
  • Can of diced tomatoes

    Optional Ingredients for tacos:
  • Vegan butter (to toast tacos)
  • Shredded Vegan Cheese
  • Salsa
  • Cilantro 
  • Vegan Sour Cream
  • Avocado

The taco recipe is vegan, vegetarian, nut-free, dairy-free and can be made gluten-free.

To make the recipe gluten-free, simply swap tortillas with gluten-free tortillas.

How To Make Chicken Tacos (Vegan)

1. Prepare your vegan chicken tacos, start by grating your extra firm tofu into shreds using a cheese grater (i use the big holes in my grater).

2. After grating the entire block of tofu, heat a non-stick pan and add 1 tbsp oil to the pan. Add your tofu shreds in the pan along with the seasonings: Cajun seasoning, paprika, red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning & salt. And mix well. Cook until slightly golden or until most of the liquid has evaporated (a few mins). Set aside onto a plate when done. Prep your vegetables in the meantime.

3. Once you move your vegan chicken shreds to a plate, use the pan again and your sliced bell peppers and onion. Sauté for a couple of minutes until slightly softened (few mins). Feel free to add a pinch of salt.

4. When your peppers and onion are softened, add the vegan chicken shred back into the pan along with chopped tomatoes and sauté for a few minutes, letting the tomatoes soak into the tofu. Set aside onto a plate.

5. Next, I love to have slightly toasted tacos, so I recommend adding vegan butter (or oil) to the same pan and adding your soft tortilla to the pan to get it slightly toasted.

6. Optionally, you can start making your vegan chicken taco by adding a little vegan cheese first (if desired) on one side of your taco and then adding the desired amount of your cooked tofu filling. If you want to add avocado, make sure you mash in avocado on the entire tortilla first.

7. Top your taco with more ingredients like chopped cilantro and more vegan cheese (optional) and close up the taco. Cook on both sides until golden (or desired).

Voila! Enjoy your vegan “chicken” tacos with vegan sour cream and/or salsa.
