This smoked tofu carbonara recipe takes 15 mins to make! It has smoked tofu bacon in a creamy and delicious dairy-free carbonara sauce!

This carbonara with smoked tofu “bacon” is so good, you won’t miss the traditional carbonara! This is a super easy recipe that replicates carbonara thanks to our secret ingredient: smoked tofu!


My smoked tofu carbonara recipe is vegan and can be made gluten-free using GF pasta!

Recipe for Smoked Tofu Carbonara

For this carbonara recipe, I used my dairy-free carbonara sauce recipe, pasta, oil, liquid smoke, agave (or sweetener of choice), soy sauce, and smoked tofu to make the “bacon”! This pasta has a lot of flavor and the smoked tofu “bacon” which also adds protein to make this dish very filling and satisfying

For the dairy-free carbonara sauce, you just need soaked cashews, vegetable stock, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, and turmeric!

Recipe for Smoked Tofu Carbonara

Ingredients

  • Pasta of choice (use gluten-free if desired)
  • Oil
  • Tofu
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Agave Nectar (or sweetener of choice)
  • Soy Sauce
  • Dark soy sauce (or just use regular soy sauce)
  • Cashews
  • Vegetable Stock
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Garlic powder
  • Turmeric
  • Kala Namak (Black salt – optional)

How To Make Carbonara + Smoked Tofu Bacon

  1. Cook the pasta in salted water according to package instructions. Save some of the pasta water then drain the pasta. Do not rinse.
  2. To make the smoked tofu “bacon,” cut the medium firm tofu into cubes. Heat oil in a pan and add the tofu.
  3. Cook until golden brown on all sides, turning occasionally.
  4. Mix the soy sauce, dark soy sauce (or just use regular soy sauce), liquid smoke, and agave nectar (or sweetener of choice) in a bowl.
  5. Turn the heat to low then pour the sauce over the tofu, toss well and cook until sauce is absorbed and the tofu is slightly caramelized. Set aside.
  6. To make the Carbonara sauce: in a blender, combine soaked cashews, water, nutritional yeast, vegetable stock (or Better Than Bouillon seasoning), garlic powder, and turmeric. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  7. Add the cooked pasta to the pan and add the sauce. Cook together for a couple of minutes, adding small splashes of pasta water, if needed.
  8. Optional: Add a pinch of kala namak (black salt) at the end for an extra “eggy” flavor.
  9. Plate the pasta and top with smoked tofu “bacon.”
  10. Serve and enjoy your creamy smoked tofu carbonara!

Ingredients

  • 3 servings pasta of choice
  • 1/2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 block tofu extra firm, cut into small cubes
  • 1 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tbsp agave nectar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp dark soy sauce optional, use more regular soy sauce if desired
  • 1 cup Cashews soaked, you can boil them for 15-20 mins to soften or soak them overnight to soften
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cube vegetable stock or 1/2 tbsp Better Than Bouillon Vegetable Base
  • 1/4 cup Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • Kala Namak optional to add as topping, also called Black Salt
