I’ll show you how to make a jumeokbap recipe in 10 mins! Jumeokbap (Korean: 김 주먹밥) is a Korean rice ball, where Jumeokbap means “fist rice” in Korean, referring to tightly packed rice balls that are a popular snack or side dish in Korea.

All you need is vegetables, cooked rice, sesame oil, and sesame seeds making it super easy to make rice balls for the whole family to enjoy (or for you to enjoy all to yourself)!

Recipe for Jumeokbap (주먹밥)

There are various different ways of making Korean rice balls (or Jumeokbap) and this Korean rice ball recipe will use assorted vegetables mixed in with the rice, along with a few other simple ingredients to add flavour. These bite-sized (or slightly larger!) delights are not only visually appealing but also super delicious and easy and fun to make.

For this recipe, you will want to use short or medium-grain white rice or sushi rice because this type of rice is more starchy and sticky and easy to form into a ball that will stay in shape. I don’t recommend using any other type of rice, as it can easily break apart.

Jumeokbap, which translates to “fist rice” or “hand rice,” gets its name from the fact that the rice balls are shaped by hand into small, compact spheres.

How To Make Jumeokbap

How To Make Jumeokbap

To prepare your Jumeokbap, prepare vegetables by dicing them finely. Use a food processor or vegetable chopper for easy dicing, if desired.

In a pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the diced carrot and cook for about a minute. Then add zucchini and onion and about 1/8 tsp of the salt. Sauté them for another couple of minutes until they become tender.

In a mixing bowl, add the cooked rice and the sautéed vegetables.

Add sesame oil, sesame seeds and the remaining half of the salt (1/8 tsp) over the rice and vegetables.

Mix everything together, ensuring the vegetables are evenly distributed throughout the rice. Once well combined, adjust any seasonings as needed.

Allow the mixture to cool slightly until it’s comfortable to handle with your hands.

Wearing food prep gloves or using clean hands, take a small handful of the rice mixture and shape it into a compact ball using your hands. Repeat this process with the remaining rice mixture.

Serve the vegetable jumeokbap as a snack, side dish, or pack them for a convenient on-the-go meal.
