I’m so excited for the new year because I know that this time of year, many of you will be trying out a plant-based lifestyle… possibly for the first time! If you are someone that has been interested in it for a while, why not give it a go?

I have an exciting completely FREE “How to go Vegan” guide coming out very soon (watch this space) which will detail so many different aspects of veganism, but I didn’t want to keep you waiting too long on some of this valuable information.

Therefore, I’d like to provide you with some of my most important tips on going vegan in this blogpost. Starting with…

Tip#1: Know your “why” & think bigger than yourself

I think this is one of the most important tips. If you have no reason to do something, why would you continue to do it, right? Whatever your reason may be at this moment of time, you must know and understand it and believe in it. Having a strong why will help you stay vegan, especially with all the barriers that this lifestyle has.

I’m gonna go as far as saying that you should really try to make that ethical connection. I know a lot of people go plant-based for health reasons, but for me, it really comes down to animals and that they don’t deserve to be mistreated. For me, this ethical connection was what kept me going. I strongly believe that an ethical connection is crucial and important to continue a plant-based and vegan lifestyle for the long term.

Plus, technically, the definition of veganism is (According to the Vegan Society): “Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.”

Tip #2: Transition at your own pace

Yes, it’s the New Year, and you believe it’s time for a New You. But that doesn’t mean that you have to go vegan overnight and do a complete 180.

Transitioning at your own pace, the pace that is comfortable for you is absolutely crucial. We all handle change differently – some of us are much more adaptable than others.

For me, giving up one animal product at a time was how I transitioned and slowly learning more about the vegan lifestyle is what ultimately made me vegan. Even though it would be amazing if more people could give up animal products overnight, I know that it’s not very realistic and sustainable to dive in so quickly. So please go at your own pace and keep moving forward.

Tip #3: Think “whole foods plant based”

Lots of people make the wrong assumption that vegan = healthy. This is simply not the case. Please understand that just because something does not include animal products, does not mean it is healthy!

One of the best ways to stay vegan long term is to feel good eating what you’re eating. If you feel like garbage because you are eating garbage, you won’t want to continue what you’re doing. Eat good to feel good.

Even though you may have gone vegan for ethics, it is still important to maintain a certain level of health to stay vegan. This doesn’t mean eating a completely “pure” and clean diet but sticking to a predominantly whole foods plant based diet is going to be very helpful.

Tip #4: Start cooking!

One of the most exciting things about delving into a plant-based lifestyle is the opportunity to try out so many different recipes that you never thought to try before. It still amazes me how creative people can be using plant-based ingredients.

For me, it helps to know a handful of easy go-to recipes that I know how to make fast while experimenting and trying out new and exciting recipes when I have the time and energy.
